Have you ever picked up your phone for “just a minute,” only to find yourself feeling discouraged, behind, lonely, or not good enough?
You scroll through photos of perfect vacations, spotless homes, happy couples, growing ministries, successful businesses, and smiling families. Before long, comparison quietly slips into your heart.
Suddenly, your own life no longer seems exciting enough.
- Your marriage feels ordinary.
- Your progress feels too slow.
- Your prayers feel unanswered.
- Your story feels less important.
But friend, comparison has a way of stealing the joy God already placed right in front of us.
The truth is, social media often shows highlight reels, not real life. Behind many carefully filtered photos are real people with struggles, disappointments, insecurities, and unanswered questions just like everyone else.
Yet comparison convinces us that everyone else is ahead while we are somehow falling behind.
Galatians 6:4-5 (NLT) says:
“Pay careful attention to your own work… For we are each responsible for our own conduct.”
God never asked you to live someone else’s story.
He created you with purpose, on purpose. Your marriage, your family, your calling, your gifts, and even your current season all matter to Him.
One of the greatest traps of comparison is that it distracts us from gratitude. Instead of noticing what God is doing in our own lives, we become focused on what He appears to be doing for everyone else.
Comparison also creates pressure. We start trying to keep up, perform, prove ourselves, or create an image instead of simply living authentically and faithfully.
But peace comes when we stop measuring our lives against other people’s timelines.
Maybe this summer is the perfect time for a reset.
Instead of spending hours scrolling, what if you spent more time being present?
- Sit outside and enjoy God’s creation.
- Take a walk with your spouse.
- Call a friend.
- Read your Bible before reaching for your phone.
- Laugh more.
- Pray more.
- Notice the blessings already around you.
Some of the most beautiful parts of life cannot be captured in a photo. They are found in quiet moments, meaningful conversations, healing, growth, and the simple gift of being together.
Psalm 139:14 (NLT) reminds us:
“Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.”
- You do not need to compete for your worth.
- You do not need to perform for God’s love.
- You do not need to compare your journey to someone else’s.
- God is still writing your story, and He is not behind.
Your Prayer:
Father God, forgive me for the times I have compared my life to others and lost sight of the blessings You have already given me. Help me walk in gratitude, peace, and confidence in the story You are writing for my life and marriage. Teach me to focus more on Your truth than the noise around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
all my best,
Dr Deborah
