There’s something about the unknown that unsettles us. When the future feels uncertain, and we’re faced with unanswered questions or unclear directions, our instinct is often to tighten our grip, to take control. But control, as comforting as it might seem, is an illusion. The more we try to control, the more anxious we become because we rely on our limited power instead of God’s limitless strength.
The Bible is filled with stories of people who had to navigate the unknown and trust God in the process. Whether Abraham left everything he knew to follow God’s call or Moses led the Israelites into the wilderness without knowing what was ahead, these people had to learn what it meant to trust in God’s promises, even when they couldn’t see the full picture.
- Surrendering Control to God
One of the biggest barriers to trusting God in the unknown is our desire to control every outcome. We want certainty and security, but faith calls us to step into the unknown, trusting that God will guide us every step. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
Letting go of control doesn’t mean being passive; it means actively choosing to submit our plans, desires, and fears to God, trusting that He knows the way forward. It’s about acknowledging that His perspective is far greater than ours and that His plans are good, even when we can’t see how everything will work out.
- Leaning Into God’s Promises
When the future feels uncertain, God’s promises are our anchor. Scripture is full of promises reminding us of God’s faithfulness and unchanging character. In Jeremiah 29:11, God says, "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Even when life feels unpredictable, God’s promises remain constant. We can lean into those promises, finding peace and assurance that He works all things together for our good. Trusting in God’s promises means believing His plan is better than anything we could imagine, even when we don’t have all the answers.
- Finding Peace in the Unknown
The unknown can stir up fear, but it can also be a place where we experience God’s peace in new ways. Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
When we release our fears and anxieties to God, we create space for His peace to flood our hearts. In the unknown, we learn to rely on His presence, trusting that He will guide us through every season, no matter how uncertain it may feel.
If you face the unknown today, know you don’t have to navigate it alone. God is with you, guiding your steps and holding you in His hands. Let go of control, lean into His promises, and trust He leads you toward a hopeful future.
your sister in Christ,
Deborah
