“The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” John 10:10 (NLT)
The Real Enemy of Marriage
Marriages today face relentless attacks. The disagreements, distance, and discouragement you feel aren’t just “marital problems.” Scripture reveals there’s a real thief — an enemy who comes to steal your joy, kill your intimacy, and destroy your unity.
The Greek word for “thief” is kleptēs (Strong’s G2812), meaning one who steals by stealth. Satan rarely announces his presence — instead, he whispers lies:
- “You’ll never change.”
- “Your spouse doesn’t care.”
- “Your marriage is beyond repair.”
But here’s the hope: Jesus came to give life — abundant life to your marriage.
Hebrew & Greek Word Spotlight
Jesus says, “I have come…” The Greek word erchomai (Strong’s G2064) means to arrive with purpose. He came for you and your marriage.
- He came to bring life (zoē – G2222) — not just existence, but God’s own life: full, eternal, purposeful.
- He promises life abundantly (perissos – G4053) — overflowing, beyond measure, more than enough for what you’re facing.
This means your marriage isn’t meant to survive simply. In Christ, it’s meant to thrive — overflowing with peace, intimacy, and joy.
Three Steps to Step Into an Abundant Marriage Life
- Identify the Thief
Where is the enemy stealing your peace? Is it in communication, trust, intimacy, or hope? Name it. Expose it. Lies lose power when brought to the light.
- Invite Jesus In
Pray together:
"Lord, we welcome You into every part of our marriage. Bring Your abundant life where we feel empty."
Abundance doesn’t come from striving — it comes from surrendering.
- Speak Life
Bless your spouse with words rooted in truth. Declare:
"We will not be destroyed. Our marriage is secure in Christ. We are walking in His abundant life together."
Reflection Questions
- Where do I see the enemy at work in our marriage?
- How does Jesus want to bring abundant life into that very area?
- What can we do this week to invite Him in?
Prayer
“Jesus, thank You for coming to give us life — zoē life — overflowing with Your goodness. We renounce the enemy’s lies and stand in Your truth. Fill our marriage with Your peace, joy, and purpose. Amen.”
Why This Matters
Healed, healthy, and hopeful marriages don’t just happen — they’re built day by day by choosing Christ. The thief wants ruin, but Jesus wants restoration. And He promises more than survival; He promises overflow.
