The decorations are up, the calendar is full, and yet something inside whispers, “I want to feel the joy I used to know.”
But joy doesn’t always arrive with fireworks. Most of the time, it comes the way it came to Bethlehem -
quiet, unexpected, and wrapped in God’s presence in the middle of ordinary moments.
This week, as we walk "The Road to Bethlehem", we meet Jesus in the places where joy grows slowly… deeply… and in ways the world can’t take away.
Think of each day’s devotional as a signpost along the road—small but steady markers pointing us toward Jesus. These moments of reflection help us slow down, lift our eyes, and notice what God is doing right in front of us. And just like the travelers who once followed a star, these signposts guide our hearts closer to the One who brings joy, peace, and renewal in every season.
Peace – Matthew 2:9–10
“When they saw the star, they were filled with joy!”
On this day, let joy whisper instead of shout. Let it meet you the way the star met the wise men—soft, steady, and full of promise.
Humble – Luke 2:6-7
“And she gave birth to her firstborn son… laid him in a manger.”
Bethlehem teaches us that humility is fertile ground for joy. God meets us where we truly are—not where we pretend to be.
Response – Luke 2:15
“Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened.”
Joy rises when we respond to God’s invitation—even imperfectly.
Worship – Matthew 2:11
“They bowed down and worshiped him.”
Worship is the doorway where joy and surrender meet. The wise men didn’t worship because everything was easy. They worshiped because they recognized who Jesus was.
Reconciliation – Luke 2:14
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”
Reconciliation doesn’t always happen overnight. But joy is knowing God is working.
Empower – Matthew 1:21
“You are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
Joy tells us, “You are not stuck. God has more for you.”
Spirit – Luke 1:35
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you…”
This last day reminds us that joy is not a feeling—it’s a fruit of God’s presence.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for leading us closer to joy—real joy that grows out of Your peace, Your humility, Your presence, and Your healing. Help us respond like the shepherds, worship like the wise men, and trust like Mary. Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with joy that isn’t shaken by circumstances. Let this week restore what felt lost and renew our hope as we continue our journey to Bethlehem. Amen.
Thank you for walking Week Three of this Advent journey with me. May joy meet you in the ordinary moments, right where you are, and remind you that Jesus is near. Let’s continue the journey next week as we draw even closer to the manger—and closer to the heart of God.
With grace,
Dr. Deborah
